kisetsu-no-sakura asked: In your list of "how to correctly be a kpop fan", you mentioned that kimchi was a slur. Could you please explain how kimchi is a racial slur? I have never heard anyone use the word "kimchi" to refer to anything else other than the fermented vegetables that's often served as side dishes.
In Korea calling someone, namely a female, “kimchi” is slang, and also a misogynistic and degrading term, for calling them a “gold digging c*nt”. Which is clearly extremely rude and I’ve read is only used if you want to fight them. So, that definitely comes into it.
Also, with Kimchi being a food, and not a person, calling a Korean person/people from Korea “(a) kimchi” literally objectifies them to being nothing more than fermented vegetables, which just so happens to be one of the staple foods and the national dish of Korea. Which isn’t nice, and therefore makes it a racial slur.
The only situation where it would be considered okay would be when talking about the idol from AA, whose stage name is Kimchi.
I agree, because I have heard racist comments using “Kimchi” thrown in as an adjective as part of the racist comment or used as the racial slur, such as “Kimchi eater” use in a derogatory way.
Another example would be how someone ‘ignorant’ person used it in this post .
